Cleopatra funded Mark Antony’s wars, but Octavian’s victory at Actium ended her rule and made her Egypt’s final queen.

At 18, Cleopatra became co-ruler of Egypt with her younger brother Ptolemy, but court advisers drove her from Alexandria in 49 BCE. She returned by persuading Julius Caesar to restore her, then outlasted her siblings and secured power through their son, Caesarion. After Caesar’s assassination, she allied with Mark Antony, had her rival sister Arsinoë executed, and funded Antony’s campaigns with Egypt’s wealth. Their ambitions escalated when Antony crowned Cleopatra Queen of Kings and named Caesarion Caesar’s heir, giving Octavian ammunition for a propaganda campaign that framed the conflict as a war against a foreign queen. At Actium in 31 BCE, Cleopatra and Antony’s forces lost; she escaped with her treasury, but Octavian’s army reached Alexandria the following year. Antony died by suicide, and Cleopatra chose death rather than be paraded in Rome. Her tomb remains undiscovered, and Roman accounts—written by her victors—shaped her legacy.
