Britain fought the Opium Wars after Lin Zexu seized 20,283 opium chests, winning Hong Kong and five open ports.
By the late 18th century, British tea demand had surged 10,000%, draining silver because China would not buy British goods. The East India Company turned Bengal poppy production into a vast opium trade, forcing farmers to abandon food crops and smuggling the drug into China. In 1839, Qing commissioner Lin Zexu ordered foreign merchants in Guangzhou to surrender their opium; Charles Elliot handed over 20,283 chests and promised British compensation, creating a liability worth about 4% of the state budget. Britain sent warships, and its technological advantage—including the steam-powered iron warship Nemesis—helped force China into the 1842 Treaty of Nanjing. China paid six million silver dollars for the destroyed opium plus $15 million in other costs, ceded Hong Kong, and opened five ports. The Second Opium War further weakened Qing control; the resulting “Century of Humiliation” still shapes Chinese nationalism and global politics.
