Video summary

Iga’s shinobi began as spies and castle detectives; postwar films later invented the familiar black-clad ninja.

The video separates the legendary ninja from the historical shinobi. During Japan’s civil wars, Iga and Kōka samurai used espionage, disguises and ambushes; Oda Nobunaga’s 1581 invasion crushed Iga, but its fighters later helped Tokugawa Ieyasu escape and rise to power. Under the Tokugawa Shogunate, their descendants served as castle detectives, gathering intelligence and uncovering an alleged 1651 plot to burn Edo and seize the castle. As Japan opened to foreign powers in 1854, spies such as Sawamura Yasusuke could not halt the Shogunate’s decline, and the Meiji reforms replaced its institutions. The historical shinobi disappeared, while kabuki, prints and modern entertainment built the myth: the straight ninja sword appeared in a 1956 tourism ad, throwing stars in a 1957 film, and ninjutsu as a martial art was largely a postwar creation.
