Bamberg’s witch trials killed more than 600 people before Emperor Ferdinand’s 1631 decree dismantled the profitable torture system.
Bamberg’s witch hunt grew from religious conflict, war, plague and crop failures, culminating in a devastating frost in 1626. Prince-Bishop Johann Georg Fuchs von Dornheim empowered a seven-lawyer commission, whose interrogations and torture—especially under Ernst Vasoldt—forced victims to accuse neighbors and relatives. Confiscated estates funded more trials, and a purpose-built Witch House kept the cycle going. By 1628, about 60 people, including city officials and their families, had been executed. Chancellor Georg Haan’s family was destroyed after he tried to intervene; councilman Johannes Junius later wrote that prisoners had to confess or invent accusations under torture. Appeals eventually reached Emperor Ferdinand, who ordered investigations and, in 1631, applied the Carolina Code across the Empire, banning unlawful trials, unlimited torture and property seizures. Von Dornheim fled, never facing justice for more than 600 deaths. The account closes by connecting historical scapegoating to present-day witch-hunt violence, including 20,000 deaths in Tanzania over two decades.
