Cleopatra outmaneuvered Ptolemy, Caesar, and Antony, but Octavian defeated her at Actium and ended Egypt’s independence.
At 18, Cleopatra shared Egypt’s throne with her younger brother Ptolemy, while Rome demanded grain, ships, and debt payments from a weakened kingdom. Driven from Alexandria, she smuggled herself to Julius Caesar and won his support; after a civil war, she returned to power, but Caesar’s assassination left their son Caesarion outside his will. Cleopatra then allied with Mark Antony, securing territory and having her sister Arsinoë executed, while Antony’s disastrous Parthian campaign and rivalry with Octavian raised the stakes. Octavian used propaganda to frame the coming conflict as a war against Cleopatra. At Actium in 31 BCE, she and Antony escaped with the treasury as their fleet collapsed. Octavian later reached Alexandria; Antony died by suicide, and Cleopatra chose her own death in 30 BCE rather than be paraded in Rome. The surviving story comes largely from Roman writers, yet Cleopatra endures as a strategist and Egypt’s most famous ruler.
