Whale Hunting Was Absolutely Crazy

Whale oil fueled London’s lamps and U.S. industry before factory ships killed 82,000 whales in 1964.
Whaling began as coastal hunting and became a major industry when Basque crews targeted slow North Atlantic right whales for meat, baleen and blubber. As nearshore stocks dwindled, American whalers pursued sperm whales, whose spermaceti could make one animal’s oil worth about $200,000 today. The hunt was deadly, and processing a 45-ton whale meant days of hazardous work aboard ship. By the 1850s, the United States had 700 whaling ships and killed more than 8,000 whales in 1853, while profits largely flowed to owners and merchants and workers faced exploitation. Petroleum first displaced whale oil in lamps, but demand for its industrial lubricant persisted. Steam-powered catcher boats and factory ships then enabled mass slaughter: 82,000 whales were reported killed in 1964, and blue whale populations fell by 98%. Activist protests helped turn public opinion, leading to an international moratorium that took effect in 1986, though Norway, Iceland and Japan did not sign it.
