Dr. Gina Poe explains how 90-minute sleep cycles support memory, growth hormone release, brain cleanup, creativity, and emotional processing.
On Huberman Lab Essentials, Andrew Huberman and UCLA professor Dr. Gina Poe explain how sleep cycles shape brain function. A typical night includes four or five cycles of about 90 minutes; early slow-wave sleep supports brain cleanup and a large growth hormone release, while consistent bedtimes help preserve these processes. Stage-two sleep spindles help transfer memories from the hippocampus to the cortex, and later sleep may combine old and new information in ways that support creativity. Poe says alcohol suppresses REM sleep, waking once to use the bathroom is usually normal, and sleep trackers are only about 70% accurate at staging sleep. She also discusses REM paralysis, sleep inertia, and how low norepinephrine during REM may help separate emotional reactions from memories, while stress before bed can interfere with adaptive processing.
