Video summary

Dihya defeated Hassan’s 40,000-man army, but scorched-earth tactics and renewed invasion ended her resistance in the late 690s.

Around 697, Imazighen queen Dihya faced the Umayyad general Hassan ibn al-Nuʿmān as Arab forces pushed into North Africa. After Hassan captured Carthage, Dihya rallied a coalition of mountain tribes and defeated his army at a river near present-day Meskiana, forcing him to retreat nearly 2,000 kilometers east. Her victory briefly helped the Byzantines retake Carthage and drew more tribes to her side. About five years later, Hassan returned. Accounts say Dihya ordered a scorched-earth campaign to deny the invaders the region’s wealth, but the destruction drove many people to defect; historians caution that later Arab chroniclers may have exaggerated or invented her role. Defeated and besieged, she reportedly foresaw her death, urged her sons to make peace and convert to Islam, and died fighting in the late 690s. Her legacy later became a symbol of Imazighen resistance, though successive storytellers reshaped her image to fit their own causes.
