Andy Galpin explains how strength training protects aging function and outlines practical rules for strength and muscle growth.
Andrew Huberman and exercise scientist Andy Galpin explain why resistance training matters beyond appearance: strength training is key to preserving neuromuscular function, while strength declines roughly 2–4% and muscle power 8–10% per year with age. Even adults over 90 improved muscle size by 30–170% in a 12-week study. Galpin distinguishes strength as force production from hypertrophy as muscle growth, then emphasizes consistency, progressive overload, individualization, and balancing specificity with variation. His “3 to 5” framework recommends 3–5 training days, exercises, sets and reps, with 3–5 minutes’ rest; strength and power work should be performed fresh and explosively. For hypertrophy, he advises at least 10 weekly working sets per muscle, often 15–20, taken close to failure. He favors adaptable schedules, such as three weekly full-body sessions, so missed workouts do not leave muscle groups untrained for long.
