Dr. Noam Sobel explains how body odor shapes friendship and aggression, while his lab digitizes smells and transmits violets online.
Neurobiologist Dr. Noam Sobel traces smell from roughly 7 million receptors in the olfactory epithelium to brain regions involved in emotion and behavior. His lab found that people touch and sniff their noses more after handshakes, and that body-odor similarity can predict whether strangers see each other as potential friends. Human chemical signals can also transmit fear; the molecule hexadecanal reduced aggression in men but increased it in women, a pattern Sobel links to protecting infants. Sniffing women’s emotional tears lowered men’s free testosterone by about 14%, an effect later replicated by a South Korean team. Finally, Sobel describes an algorithm that predicts odor similarity and creates odor “metamers” with no shared molecules. In an early demonstration, 15 of 16 participants identified violets recreated from a digital signal, pointing toward future odor transmission and, eventually, disease detection through body odors.
