Oded Rechavi explains C. elegans inheriting antiviral small RNAs and behavior changes across three generations
Andrew Huberman and Dr. Oded Rechavi examine why eye color is inherited but learned knowledge and muscle usually are not. DNA provides the genome, RNA regulates or expresses its instructions, and the Weismann barrier separates experience-sensitive somatic cells from sperm and eggs; epigenetic reprogramming also erases roughly 90% of modifications between generations. In C. elegans, however, small RNAs can cross that barrier: descendants of virus-exposed worms inherit antiviral RNAs and remain protected even without the machinery to produce them. Rechavi’s 2019 Cell study further showed that altering natural small RNAs in the worm brain changed food-finding behavior for three generations through the germline gene sage-2. The findings are established in worms, while comparable mechanisms in mammals and humans remain unproven but could eventually inform RNA-based diagnostics and IVF.
