Dr. Gina Poe explains how 90-minute sleep cycles, REM, and slow-wave sleep shape memory, creativity, and emotional recovery.
Dr. Gina Poe and Andrew Huberman map sleep into N1, N2, slow-wave N3, and REM cycles lasting about 90 minutes, with a healthy night totaling 7.5–8 hours. The first sleep cycle delivers a major growth-hormone pulse, supports protein synthesis, and uses slow waves to clear metabolic debris; consistent bedtimes help preserve these benefits. N2 sleep spindles connect the hippocampus with the cortex to consolidate new learning, while later REM periods combine memories and may foster creativity. Alcohol suppresses REM and disrupts memory processing. Poe also explains how the locus coeruleus and norepinephrine regulate alertness, learning, and emotional memory: its shutdown during REM may help separate traumatic emotions from useful facts, provided people enter sleep calm rather than stressed. Sleep trackers are useful but only about 70% accurate for staging sleep.
