Video summary

Cleopatra outmaneuvers Ptolemy, Caesar, Antony, and Octavian before losing Egypt at Actium in 30 BCE.

Cleopatra’s rise was forged through family warfare, Roman debt, and ruthless political calculation. Crowned at 18 beside her brother Ptolemy, she was expelled from Alexandria in 49 BCE, then secretly reached Julius Caesar in a linen sack and regained the throne. She eliminated rival siblings, secured Caesarion as her heir, and later allied with Mark Antony, gaining territories and proclaiming Caesarion Caesar’s true heir. Their confrontation with Octavian culminated at Actium in 31 BCE, where Cleopatra supplied 60 ships, provisions, and nearly 700 tonnes of silver. After defeat, Antony died by suicide and Cleopatra refused to be paraded in Rome, choosing death on August 10, 30 BCE. Roman propaganda reduced her to beauty and seduction, but surviving accounts still reveal a formidable strategist who ruled Egypt until the end.
