Real shinobi served Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu before modern ninja myths emerged from kabuki, films, and manga.

The ninja was far less theatrical than popular culture suggests. In 1581, Oda Nobunaga invaded Iga with more than 40,000 samurai, crushing a region famed for espionage, ambushes, and mountain warfare. After Nobunaga’s death, Iga and Kōka warriors led by Hattori Hanzo helped Tokugawa Ieyasu escape enemy territory, enabling his rise as shogun and the start of a long peace. Under the Tokugawa Shogunate, shinobi skills evolved into surveillance and intelligence work, including the detection of a 1651 plot to burn Edo and attack the young shogun’s government. Commodore Perry’s arrival in 1854 exposed the limits of this feudal intelligence system, and the Meiji Restoration replaced it with modern secret police. The ninja’s iconic black outfit, throwing stars, straight sword, and ninjutsu were largely created or popularized in the 20th century through kabuki, cinema, manga, and tourism.
