Chelsea Finn says Physical Intelligence’s robots ran a latte task for 13 hours and RL doubled throughput.

At Startup School 2026, Physical Intelligence cofounder Chelsea Finn explained why useful robots must operate autonomously and reliably, not merely perform impressive demos. Her team used reinforcement learning, human interventions and a general value function to help robots learn from failures; the approach doubled throughput, and an espresso-making robot achieved over 90% success while running for 13 hours. Finn also described adding short-term video and longer-term text memory, enabling a robot to clean a kitchen autonomously for 10–15 minutes. The PIO7 model, trained on diverse robot, human-video and web data with detailed prompts, matched or beat task-specific specialists out of the box and showed generalization to an air fryer and a new robot platform. In Q&A, Finn said a robotics “ChatGPT moment” may be years away because physical deployment takes time, and emphasized that real robot experience remains essential training data.
