Nathan Lambert says China matches U.S. AI talent but lacks compute, while open models trail frontier labs on different timelines.

AI researcher Nathan Lambert tells a16z partner Lisha Li that model progress depends on compute, data, and talent. OpenAI and Anthropic have the resources and organizational focus to pioneer new approaches, while Chinese labs have comparable talent but far less compute; distillation helps, though its role in today’s reasoning models remains uncertain. Lambert expects closed models to reach high-value markets first, with open models following as costs fall and companies seek private, locally run systems. He argues that frontier gains increasingly depend on costly, high-quality data and reinforcement-learning environments, many of which still contain flaws that can cause reward hacking. Through his new lab, Trillium, he plans to publish open environments and document AI research automation so others can study how models improve. Lambert sees no clear evidence of imminent recursive self-improvement-driven takeoff, but warns that society is poorly prepared for cybersecurity risks as capabilities spread.
