Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston says orbital data centers could add 20 GW of compute, with 88,000 satellites planned.
Starcloud CEO Philip Johnston says the company began in January 2024 by booking a SpaceX launch before deciding what to fly, then shifted from space-based solar after calculating that transmitting power wastes 95% of it. Starcloud-1 launched an Nvidia H100, trained an AI model in orbit, and survived a two-week commissioning period after repeatedly restarting. Johnston says Starcloud’s biggest engineering challenges are cooling chips in a vacuum and protecting them from radiation; its planned radiator aims for one-tenth the mass and one-five-hundredth the cost per watt of the ISS radiator. Starcloud says its next spacecraft will serve government and military customers, while a proposed 88,000-satellite constellation could provide about 20 GW of compute. Johnston also describes investor skepticism, a $200 million funding milestone, and the growing appeal of space-based infrastructure as terrestrial data-center construction faces energy and regulatory constraints.
