Why do right-wing populists keep coming back?

Right-wing populism survives defeats because inequality, cultural disconnects, and social media keep fueling support.
Donald Trump’s weak approval, Viktor Orbán’s landslide defeat, and Brexit regret may look like the end of right-wing populism, but Austria and Italy show how populist movements can rebound after failures in government. The video defines populism as a people-versus-elites political frame, then examines four explanations for its persistence. Economic decline matters: US workers without college degrees have seen little real wage growth since 1965, and trade- and automation-hit regions lean toward populists. Yet individual economic hardship predicts support less well than immigration views and distrust of institutions. A cultural representation gap also helps: voters are generally more restrictive on immigration than politicians, and Denmark’s stricter policies coincided with the populist right falling from over 20% support to below 10%. Survey data from more than 300,000 Europeans finds no broad rise in racism or authoritarianism. Instead, social media amplifies extreme content and connects fringe voices. The conclusion: inequality, cultural disconnects, and algorithmic amplification together explain populism’s recurring surges.
