A radiation lecture explains why Fukushima’s spent-fuel pool narrowly avoided a fire that could have released 100 times more radiation than the accident did.
Professor R. Scott Kemp reviews radiation types, shielding, and how gamma rays interact with matter through photoelectric absorption, Compton scattering, and pair production. He contrasts low-LET radiation with dense, localized high-LET damage, then covers decay activity, half-lives, natural radon exposure, and secular equilibrium in radioactive chains. The lecture turns to reactor fuel: fission products generate decay heat, while spent-fuel bundles can initially exceed 100 sieverts per hour at one meter. At Fukushima, loss of offsite power heated the spent-fuel pool, but earthquake damage to a sluice gate let water leak into it and kept the fuel covered. An NRC estimate suggested an uncovered pool fire could have released about 100 times the radiation released—roughly 25 times Chernobyl’s release. Kemp also explains cesium-137 and iodine risks, dose units, and how faulty DNA repair can turn radiation damage into mutations or cell death.
