Dr. Elissa Epel explains how stress reframing, radical acceptance, and purpose can build resilience and protect health.
Andrew Huberman and UCSF stress researcher Dr. Elissa Epel distinguish useful acute stress from chronic stress that keeps the body vigilant, drains mitochondrial energy, and can accelerate cellular aging. Epel offers three ways to interrupt rumination: notice thought patterns, use the body to discharge stress, and seek calming environments and safety signals. She explains that viewing a stressor as a challenge rather than a threat can improve performance, speed recovery, and reduce inflammation. In a study of caregiving mothers, stronger mitochondrial activity tracked with more positive daily mood, especially in the evening. For stressors that cannot be changed, Epel recommends practicing radical acceptance—“dropping the rope”—instead of repeatedly wishing circumstances were different. She also advocates tolerating uncertainty, shifting between purposeful effort and letting go, and creating a meaningful narrative; purpose-driven activity has even been linked to hippocampal growth in older adults.
