Sam Harris says meditation can reveal the self as an illusion and help us find freedom and fulfillment in ordinary moments.
Andrew Huberman asks Sam Harris what the self is. Harris argues that meditation can reveal there is no separate inner subject standing apart from experience: thoughts and sensations arise, but the supposed observer is not independently found. Meditation may improve focus and reduce stress, he says, but its deeper promise is recognizing this self-illusion and the unity of experience. He describes mindfulness as noticing thoughts without being carried away by them, and says silent retreats can expose how distractible we are—even when attention seems steady at first. Concentration practices can help, but the aim is a “sky-like mind” that neither clings to pleasant experiences nor rejects unpleasant ones. Harris says psychedelics, including his first MDMA experience at 18, helped him see that another way of experiencing life was possible, while meditation offers a route to lasting change in ordinary consciousness. He concludes that goals provide only brief satisfaction; meditation can help people rest attention in the present and feel fulfilled without waiting for the next good thing to happen.
