Shaka turned the small Zulu chiefdom into a 20,000-square-kilometer kingdom before his brothers killed him in 1828.
Born in 1787 to Nandi and the Zulu chief Senzangakona, Shaka grew up exiled after his parents’ relationship became a scandal. He rose as a formidable warrior under Mthethwa king Dingiswayo, then returned home, took power, and reorganized the Zulu around military regiments, a short stabbing spear, and the chest-and-horns battle formation. His campaigns expanded Zulu influence across more than 20,000 square kilometers, incorporating some conquered people while driving others from their homes amid drought, warfare, firearms, and the slave trade. After his mother died, accounts describe extreme mourning orders that deepened resentment. In 1828, Shaka’s brothers killed him; his death sparked a succession struggle, and the kingdom was later conquered in the Anglo-Zulu War and split into 13 chiefdoms. The video cautions that colonial accounts of Shaka’s cruelty and innovations are disputed, portraying him as both conqueror and statebuilder.
