Dr. Oded Rechavi explains how small RNAs let C. elegans pass viral resistance and food-finding behavior across generations.
Andrew Huberman speaks with Tel Aviv University geneticist Dr. Oded Rechavi about why learned traits are generally not inherited: the Weismann barrier separates body cells from sperm and eggs, while epigenetic reprogramming erases about 90% of modifications in mammals. Rechavi then describes evidence in C. elegans, whose 959 cells and three-day generations make inheritance easy to study. Small RNAs can silence viruses, spread from somatic cells into germ cells, and protect descendants—even worms unable to make those RNAs themselves. In a 2019 Cell study, changing small-RNA production in a worm’s brain affected descendants’ food-finding behavior for up to three generations through a germline gene. Rechavi stresses that comparable inheritance in humans remains unproven, though RNA-based diagnostics and future interventions could be possible if the mechanisms become clear.
