Rebuilding Git for AI Agents and The Future of Developer Tools | Deep Dives with a16z

影片總結

GitButler CEO Scott Chacon is redesigning Git for AI agents, with shared parallel branches and a rethink of code review.

Scott Chacon, GitHub cofounder and GitButler CEO, says Git’s core storage and transfer technology remains strong, but its command-line interface has changed little since 2005 and was never designed around a unified user experience. GitButler keeps Git compatibility while offering GUI, TUI, and CLI tools, including agent-friendly output and commands that report status after changes. Its parallel-branch model lets multiple agents work in one directory, see one another’s edits, and stack branches when they touch the same files. Chacon argues that GitHub’s next-generation successor may look unlike today’s hosting platform, and that code review should move beyond centralized pull requests toward local, testable patch review assisted by agents. As implementation gets cheaper, he says teams’ key constraint will be agreeing on what to build: clear specifications, writing, and communication may become developers’ most valuable skills.
