Neuralink’s Dr. Matthew MacDougall explains how brain implants could restore digital control for paralysis patients and eventually reconnect the brain to the body.

Neuralink neurosurgeon Dr. Matthew MacDougall describes the brain as interconnected modules, where frontal-lobe damage can destroy impulse control. He explains how laser surgery guided by real-time MRI can remove deep tumors through a 2 mm skull opening while sparing surrounding tissue. Neuralink’s near-term goal is to help people with paralysis control a computer cursor and keyboard using motor intentions; a robot places tiny electrodes because human hands cannot do so precisely. MacDougall says reconnecting brain signals to the body through spinal-cord stimulation is a later possibility, and that software and users learn to interpret each other’s signals over time. He also discusses his passive RFID hand implant, animal research for safety testing, and a longer-term vision of brain interfaces addressing depression and addiction and expanding communication with AI.
