Dr. Gina Poe explains how sleep stages support memory, growth hormone release, brain cleanup, creativity, and emotional processing.
UCLA professor Dr. Gina Poe explains that sleep cycles through non-REM and REM stages about every 90 minutes, with roughly four or five cycles in a 7.5–8-hour night. Early deep slow-wave sleep supports brain cleanup and a large growth hormone release, while stage-two sleep spindles help transfer memories from the hippocampus to the cortex. Poe recommends consistent bedtimes, noting that alcohol suppresses REM sleep and can disrupt memory consolidation. Later-night REM sleep supports creativity by linking old and new ideas, and waking during the night to use the bathroom is usually normal if you can return to sleep. She cautions that sleep trackers are only about 70% accurate at staging sleep. Poe also describes REM sleep’s low norepinephrine as potentially helping separate traumatic memories from their emotional charge, while emphasizing that calming the nervous system before bed may support adaptive sleep.
