Sony’s 2002 PS2 Linux Kit took a proprietary hard drive and a RetroTINK to boot, then ran homebrew games on a 70-node-cluster-era console.
Sony’s official 2002 PS2 Linux Kit promised web browsing and game development, but the Japanese discs and missing proprietary hard drive adapter made setup a long hardware puzzle. The team worked around region locking with Free DVD Boot, FMCBoot, patched Linux ISOs and a RetroTINK for the system’s unusual green-sync video output. After more than a dozen failed hard-drive attempts, an official Sony drive finally let the installer run: Condor GNU/Linux, based on Red Hat and adapted for MIPS. Its dated desktop could browse only some websites, while homebrew games had to be launched from the terminal. The experiment’s wider legacy was more serious: the NCSA built a 70-node PS2 cluster, and reports of Iraq importing 4,000 consoles were never verified. Sony later removed Linux from PS3 with an update and paid nearly $4 million to settle a class-action lawsuit.
