Neuralink’s Dr. Matthew MacDougall aims to help people with paralysis control computers, with spinal-cord reconnection a future goal.
Neurosurgeon Matthew MacDougall describes the brain as interconnected functional modules, noting that frontal-lobe damage can devastate impulse control. He explains how laser ablation guided by real-time MRI can remove deep brain tumors through a 2-mm skull opening while sparing surrounding tissue. At Neuralink, robotic surgery places hair-thin electrodes in motor cortex; the first intended use is helping people with paralysis control a computer cursor and keyboard through imagined movement, not immediately restoring limb movement. MacDougall says software and users learn to interpret each other’s signals, and he considers the implant safer than many routine operations based on his surgical experience. He also describes his passive RFID hand implant, used to unlock doors, and outlines a future possibility of linking brain and spinal-cord devices to restore movement. He defends animal studies as necessary for safety testing, then imagines future interfaces addressing addiction and depression and expanding communication and cognition with AI.
