NASA chief Jared Isaacman lays out Artemis 3 in 2027, a 2028 moon landing, and nuclear-powered missions to Mars.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says the agency is refocusing on a U.S. return to the Moon amid competition with China. He plans to roll out Artemis 3 for a tanking test before year-end, launch it in summer 2027 to test Blue Origin and SpaceX landers in low Earth orbit, and send astronauts back to the lunar surface on Artemis 4 in 2028. A near-monthly cadence of missions would build a moon base and test robotics, power, habitats, and use of lunar resources, especially near the water-rich south pole. Isaacman also described SR1 Freedom, a planned 100-kilowatt fission-powered spacecraft that would launch in 2028, fly past Mars, and release three helicopters to scout for subsurface ice. He argued nuclear electric propulsion could enable future deep-space missions, while NASA’s roughly $25 billion budget should be better allocated and commercial services used where practical. He warned China could reach the Moon by 2030 and build a south-pole base with Russia, and called SpaceX essential to U.S. space capabilities.
