Stripe CEO Patrick Collison says new businesses on Stripe are up nearly 2x year over year, making this a remarkable time to start.
At Startup School 2026, Stripe cofounder Patrick Collison told YC’s Harj Taggar that AI does not eliminate the value of learning: knowledge held in your own “cognitive cache” is faster to use, and he still prefers writing himself. He described dropping out of MIT twice, while cautioning students that college is not a trapdoor and startup opportunities are unlikely to disappear in a few years. Stripe began after the Collison brothers attended Startup School in Berkeley in 2009 and decided over sushi in Potrero Hill to try payments; it took nearly two years to launch publicly, with early customers shaping the product. Collison said AI may reward more ambitious, less conventional startup strategies. Stripe data shows new businesses starting on the platform are up nearly 2x year over year, while median performance and odds of reaching revenue milestones are improving. He attributes faster adoption partly to businesses’ fear of falling behind and expects AI to enable thousands of winners, not just a few dominant firms.
