Radiant targets 1MW portable reactors, while Heron Link modernizes the grid with 5MW solid-state power conversion.
Radiant founder Doug Bernauer and Heron founder Drew Baglino argue that America’s energy crisis is primarily a delivery problem, not a generation problem. Radiant is developing trailer-sized, 1MW microreactors that can arrive off-grid, power up within 48 hours, and operate for five years—equivalent to roughly 2 million gallons of diesel. Heron’s first product, Heron Link, is a 5MW bidirectional solid-state transformer converting 800–1,500V DC to 34,000V AC, using modular power electronics and software to make the grid more flexible. Both companies favor factory manufacturing over field-built infrastructure: Heron plans a 40GW annual factory, while Radiant is building reactors as mass-produced products. They also contend that data centers can ultimately benefit the grid by increasing utilization, provided software and controls prevent large instantaneous load dropouts such as a reported 2GW Virginia event.
