Dropbox Was Worth $10 Billion. Then Everyone Left

Dropbox grew to 700 million users and a $10 billion valuation, but platform rivals, a 68-million-account breach, and lost focus eroded its momentum.
Drew Houston began building Dropbox after repeatedly forgetting his flash drive; a 2008 TechCrunch 50 demo and referral offer helped the service grow from 100,000 users to 4 million in 15 months. It later reached 700 million registered users and a $10 billion valuation, but Steve Jobs had warned that file syncing looked like a feature—and Apple, Google, and Microsoft soon bundled competing storage into their platforms. Dropbox’s 2 GB free tier and higher prices struggled against those ecosystems. A 2012 breach exposed credentials for 68 million accounts, and the company stayed quiet until the data surfaced in 2016, intensifying privacy concerns. Dropbox then cycled through products such as Mailbox and Carousel without settling on a clear identity. It capped free accounts at three devices, raised prices, and now pitches AI search with Dash. Revenue fell for the first time in 2025; after borrowing $2 billion, it announced $1.2 billion in buybacks. The story’s lesson: a polished product needs a durable advantage and focus to resist being absorbed by larger platforms.
