GitButler rethinks Git for AI agents with parallel branches, agent-ready CLIs, and patch-based code review
Scott Chacon, GitHub cofounder and CEO of GitButler, argues that Git’s user interface has barely evolved since 2005, despite major changes in how software is built. GitButler keeps Git’s storage and protocols but adds human, TUI, and agent-optimized interfaces, including JSON, Markdown, and status-aware CLI output. Its parallel-branch model lets multiple agents edit one working directory, see one another’s changes, and stack branches without the merge conflicts created by separate worktrees. Chacon also questions GitHub’s branch-based pull requests, proposing more local, patch-based review where agents run tests and summarize issues. As implementation becomes cheaper, he says developers’ key advantage will be writing clear specifications, communicating intent, and building consensus across human and AI teams.
