Hadrian’s Alabama Factory Four will support Columbia and Virginia submarines as the Navy faces 70 million work hours and a severe labor shortage.
At the opening of Hadrian’s 2.25-million-square-foot Factory Four in Cherokee, Alabama, CEO Chris Power and Vice Admiral Robert Gaucher discuss the submarine industrial base. Gaucher says submarines provide stealth, protect sea lanes and deliver survivable nuclear deterrence; rebuilding the fleet now requires about 70 million work hours, more than five times the workload of a decade ago. Power argues the constraint is skilled labor, not funding, and says software-enabled factories and workforce training must boost productivity. Gaucher describes his new Pentagon role coordinating submarine production and says success means moving toward delivery targets while expanding supplier capacity. The factory could make obsolete parts for existing submarines and relieve bottlenecks such as air flasks and hatches. The speakers also see potential links between drone manufacturing and submarine modules, while stressing that crewed submarines remain versatile command-and-control platforms. Power says the model depends on people and precision, not automation alone, and Hadrian plans to qualify production rapidly and replicate factories nationwide.
