Satya Nadella says Microsoft will invest $80 billion in Azure and argues AI safety, broad access, and data-center benefits must go together.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella argued that AI should remain under human control while reaching people broadly, with customer choice, privacy, model control, and independent safety testing. Discussing agent risks, he distinguished basic failures such as exposed API keys from novel reward-hacking behavior, calling for containment, auditable actions, and stronger monitoring. He said frontier models already have unused capability, and adoption depends on better products, interoperable systems, and reliable workflows. On economics, he framed open-source models as competition that can lower costs and make application businesses more viable. Nadella defended Microsoft’s AI strategy: building for many customers, reporting more than 30 million Copilot subscribers, developing its own MAI models, and using a mix of chips and rented or leased capacity. He also called for international safety norms and pointed to Quincy, Washington, where a data center helped raise tax revenues twelvefold and supported community facilities and construction jobs.
