Josh Elman predicts consumer AI will surpass productivity, with Siri, ChatGPT, Robinhood, and TikTok illustrating retention-driven growth.
On the Andreessen Horowitz podcast, Josh Elman argues that AI’s next chapter is not job replacement but helping people spend their time better, connect, explore, and create. Drawing on Apple’s Siri AI work, he describes “personal intelligence” that searches messages, calendars, and notes—for example, finding a dinner address from an old text. He says ChatGPT succeeded because it felt over 10 times better than Google for some searches, while durable products must prioritize retention over rapid user counts. Robinhood grew from commission-free trading and a “give a stock, get a stock” referral loop; Musical.ly became TikTok after ByteDance paired strong retention with heavy paid acquisition. Elman expects agents to route users into richer apps, creators and word of mouth to drive discovery, and startups to reinvent travel, finance, health, entertainment, and social connection.
