Cloud gaming works — but it's not winning

Sean Hollister explains why cloud gaming still struggles with latency, GPU costs, licensing, and whether Grand Theft Auto 6 can change the market.
The Verge’s David Pierce talks with Sean Hollister about why cloud gaming can work impressively—Hollister even beat a Sekiro boss on GeForce Now—but still hasn’t become the default. The main problem is connection reliability and latency, not simply bandwidth: every network hop can disrupt real-time play, while locally rendered online games avoid streaming every frame. Cloud gaming also faces costly GPUs and uncertain economics; Nvidia’s premium tier shows its potential, but Google Stadia failed and Amazon Luna has repeatedly changed direction. Microsoft has Azure, Xbox, and Activision Blizzard, yet app-store fees, legal commitments around Call of Duty, hardware strategy, and publisher licensing limit its reach. Even GeForce Now must secure streaming rights for games users already own. Hollister says GTA 6 may prompt consumers to spend heavily—PS5 Pros have reached $1,200 on eBay—but may not make cloud subscriptions sustainable. The show closes with David Pierce endorsing Pope Leo’s view that AI’s future depends on human choices and that machines are tools, not persons.
