Boom Supersonic’s Blake Scholl says XB-1 broke the sound barrier without a ground boom, while its engine targets 42-megawatt data-center power.
Boom Supersonic founder Blake Scholl argues that air travel has stagnated since Concorde and Boeing’s last new airliner in 2004. He says a team of about 50 built XB-1, which became the first privately developed jet to break the sound barrier in 2025. Its “boomless cruise” approach redirects sonic booms upward; Scholl says the US supersonic-flight ban ended through an executive order, and legislation has advanced unanimously in Congress. After splitting with Rolls-Royce, Boom is developing and manufacturing its own engines. A modified engine core can generate 42 megawatts for data centers without water, with tens of gigawatts of customer demand and plans to add more than 10 gigawatts to the grid over five years. Scholl estimates a three-hour round trip across the Atlantic at Mach 1.7 could break even around $3,500, with service targeted in about four years. Over land, boomless flight could reach Mach 1.3, cutting New York–San Francisco travel to roughly 30 minutes.
